Sarva Pitru Amavasya · Dubai

Home Vidhi for Every Ancestor

Saturday, 10 October 2026 · Shani + Pitru Amavasya · Final day of Pitru Paksha. Honour every ancestor — known and unknown — from your own home in Dubai. No pandit, no travel. Just sincerity, water, and til.

Lit clay diya with black til and white flowers for Sarva Pitru Amavasya

A south-facing diya at sunset — light for every ancestor.

Yeh aapki galti nahi hai. Some of what you carry came down your family line.

On this one day, you can honour every ancestor from your own home in Dubai. Intention matters more than the minute. Converted from Indian Standard Time (Dubai is 1h 30m behind IST). Abu Dhabi and Sharjah are within a few minutes. If you miss the Aparahna window, do Tarpan any time before 7:50 pm.

Small packet — any Indian grocery or Lulu

Kusha grass (darbha)

Pooja stores in Bur Dubai / Meena Bazaar. No kusha? Use a few blades of durva grass

Til oil (gingelly oil)

Cold-pressed only — not dark, toasted Chinese sesame oil

Clay diya + cotton wicks

One diya for the south-facing lamp at sunset

Copper or steel lota + a thali

Lota to pour from, thali to receive the water

White flowers + raw rice

Jau (barley) if you find it — optional but traditional

Food for Panchbali

Simple sattvic meal: rice, dal, kheer. No onion, no garlic

Black til / mustard oil to donate

It's also Shani Amavasya — give to someone who serves you

Apartment tip

After Tarpan, never pour the water into the sink. Pour it at the base of a potted plant or a tree outside your building. The offering should return to the earth.

03 · Tarpan, Step by Step

How to Offer from Home

Copper lota pouring water with black til and flowers for Tarpan
  1. 01Bathe, wear clean white or light clothes. Keep the day free of non-veg and alcohol.
  2. 02In the Aparahna window, sit facing south. Keep an ancestor's photo in front of you if you have one.
  3. 03Fill the lota with water, add a pinch of black til and a few flowers. Hold kusha in your right hand.
  4. 04Say your name (and gotra, if you know it). Then name each ancestor you remember — father's side, then mother's side.
  5. 05For each one, pour water slowly over the base of the thumb of your right hand into the thali, 3 times, chanting the mantra below.
  6. 06Finally, offer three more times for all the ancestors whose names you don't know. Ask forgiveness, and forgive.

For each ancestor

ॐ पितृभ्यः नमः

Om Pitṛbhyaḥ Namaḥ

“Salutations to my ancestors.”

For all ancestors, known and unknown

ॐ सर्व पितृ देवताभ्यो नमः

Om Sarva Pitṛ Devatābhyo Namaḥ

“Salutations to all ancestral souls of my line.”

Pitru Stuti · Chant 3 times to close

देवताभ्यः पितृभ्यश्च महायोगिभ्य एव च। नमः स्वधायै स्वाहायै नित्यमेव नमो नमः ॥

Devatābhyaḥ Pitṛbhyaśca Mahāyogibhya Eva Ca | Namaḥ Svadhāyai Svāhāyai Nityameva Namo Namaḥ ||

“Salutations to the Devas, to the ancestors, and to the great yogis. Salutations to Svadha and Svaha, again and again, forever.”
